For 2010, the BMW 5 Series adds a new Gran Turismo model, which uses a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, mated to an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission, and which will debut as a 550i designation. The largest model in the 5 Series lineup, it features a unique two-piece "bi-modal" trunk with a power-operated liftgate similar to the X models, and a small, separately-opening trunk lid under the rear window.
The 5 Series models (except M5 and Gran Turismo) must now be ordered with either an Executive Edition or M Sport Edition package, depending on the model, with a corresponding increase in price. The M5 is unchanged.
The 5 Series offers a choice of five engines: a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder in the 528i and 528i xDrive sedan; a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder in the 535i xDrive sedan and Touring (wagon); a 4.8-litre V8 in the 550i sedan; a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 in the Gran Turismo; and a 5.0-litre V10 in the M5. All use a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic, except for the M5, which uses the six-speed manual or optional seven-speed sequential manual gearbox, and the Gran Turismo, which uses an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Features on the 528i and 528i xDrive include 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, automatic bi-xenon headlamps, fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, heated washer nozzles, tire pressure monitoring system, active front head restraints, alarm system with interior motion detector, auto-dimming heated mirrors, climate-controlled front armrest storage, auto-dimming rearview mirror, ambiance lighting, cruise control, power sunroof, heated ten-way power seats with driver's side memory, rear-seat pass-through with ski bag, CD/MP3 stereo with Sirius satellite radio, and Bluetooth connectivity. The 528i xDrive also includes headlamp washers. The Executive Edition, which is added to both models, includes three-spoke heated leather-wrapped multifunction sport steering wheel with power tilt and telescopic column, Comfort Access with pushbutton start, Park Distance Control, hard drive-based navigation system with voice control, USB port, Sirius satellite radio, and Dakota leather upholstery.
The 535i xDrive sedan builds on the 528i xDrive sedan and adds adaptive headlamps with washers, Comfort Access, heated leather-wrapped multifunction sport steering wheel with power tilt and telescopic column, and Dakota leather upholstery. It must be ordered with either an Executive Edition, which adds garage door opener, comfort seats, Park Distance Control, navigation system, Sirius satellite radio, USB port and BMW Individual Audio System with Dirac Live; or the M Sport Edition, which adds the Executive Edition's features along with an M Sport Package of M Aerodynamic package, M steering wheel, anthracite roof liner, matte black shadow line exterior trim, and 18-inch M double-spoke alloy wheels.
The 535i xDrive Touring is similarly equipped, but adds power tailgate, roof rails, and rear washer-wiper. It comes only with the Executive Edition offered on the sedan.
The 550i adds 19-inch alloy wheels, M sport suspension and exhaust, Park Distance Control, M Aerodynamic package, matte black shadow line exterior trim, anthracite roof liner, garage door opener, four-way power lumbar support, three-spoke M multifunction steering wheel, ten-way power sport seats, BMW TeleServices, and hard drive-based navigation system with voice control. It must be ordered with the M Sport Edition package, which adds electric rear sunshade, manual rear side sunshades, comfort seats, heated rear seat, head-up display, Sirius satellite radio, USB port, BMW Individual Audio System with Dirac Live, and piano black trim.
The Gran Turismo is equipped similarly to the 550i, but adds four-zone air conditioning with solar and fogging sensor, three-mode Dynamic Drive Control, self-levelling rear suspension, panoramic sunroof, unique 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat, and premium 600-watt stereo.
The M5 is equipped similarly to the 550i and adds electronic damper control, cross-drilled brake rotors, M power response button, M5-specific sport suspension, Servotronic speed-sensitive steering, Alcantara roof liner, heated 12-way Extended Merino leather sport seats, six-CD stereo, Logic7 sound system, and M instrument dials with aluminum trim. An Executive Package of electric rear sunshade, manual rear side sunshades, M multifunction seat, active seat bolsters, heated rear seats and head-up display is optional.
